For this project Adrian Schnegg and I monitored our own internet usage over a long time period. Out of the collected data we created a representative week of 7 days. Our main goal was to visualize the amount of third party websites we accessed without noticing. A connection to a third party site is made if a website uses a certain service provided by another site (e.g. Facebook, Google, YouTube or others). This can enhance the usability of a website, but as visitor we are often not aware of this connection. Furthermore these connections can be used for tracking people or collect personal data.
You can use the plugin LightBeam (for Firefox) to see all third party websites in the background. If you want to know more about privacy, and how you can protect yourself, visit «Digital Fingerprints».
